Music and Its Importance To Teenagers

Music is a very broad term. From pop to rap, from R&B to Hip-Hop, there are many different types of music, which is why almost anyone can listen to and enjoy it. But I believe that there is one specific age group that benefits from it the most. Us. According to the Common Sense Media Census, 82- 83% of teenagers listen to music. And many–like me–find that it helps them focus during important tasks like studying or doing homework.

More than that, shared music tastes can help foster connections between teens. Discussing music artists, bands, and songs can be conversation starters with people you don’t really know. It’s also really fun talking about something you like to someone else who understands your references. In fact, being part of music fandoms can give teens a feeling of inclusion and make them feel like they are a part of something.

Research suggests that music triggers the release of dopamine and oxytocin(chemicals that make you happy) and reduces the levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Listening to music can even contribute to brain development! Music helps the brain process sounds, speech, and information much faster. In addition, music can help improve memory, concentration, and language skills. It can reduce anxiety, improve sleep quality, and help people manage their emotions. It’s also proven that certain types of music, like instrumental music(not my taste, but some like it) can help students focus while studying or completing tasks! I could go on and on about the benefits of music.

Music can also help you understand your emotions. If you’re going through a tough time, music can help distract you from uncomfortable experiences. When you’re happy, you listen to happy music. When you’re sad, you listen to sad music. When you’re bored, guess what? You can listen to music!

Music can mean different things to different people. To some, it provides comfort and happiness. To others, it’s a creative outlet. It can be a way for people to find their identities. The genres and styles of music that you like often represent your personality and individuality. Choosing a specific artist or genre can help teenagers grow their independence and express their values.

Music is also just fun. That’s what makes it so valuable to teenagers. It makes you feel happier and more excited. It’s so enjoyable that sometimes you can listen for hours without even realizing how much time has passed. Music is played at parties, dances (well, obviously, it’s a dance?), and pretty much any social gathering. You can sing karaoke with your friends, dance to your favorite songs, or just hang out and listen to music together. Music is honestly so versatile; there’s something for everyone and every part of your life(unless you don’t like music, which would be sad). Even if you don’t like music, you can’t escape it. It’s everywhere. You could be scrolling, walking, or just living life, and you will hear music.

At the end of the day, music is so much more important than just sounds playing through headphones. It can help us learn, connect with other people, understand our emotions, and express who we are. Everyone experiences music differently, and that’s what makes it so special. Whether it’s a song that helps you get through a difficult day or one that you can’t stop singing with your friends, music has a way of becoming part of our lives. And honestly, I think that’s what makes it so valuable to teenagers.
