October 3rd snuck up on us, and so did that gratifying panic to hit “purchase.” Your first option is sold out, and the price is climbing upwards of an arm and a leg. The amount of scam stories this year was hilarious, too. My one friend was fooled by not one, but two fraudulent websites (shoutout Pepper Mayo versus Peppermayo). Even so, the most fun part of the dance is the dress.
Here is what I noticed about this year’s looks. First, out with the satin and mesh. Girls are over the “Lucy in the Sky” slip-dress look and shifting their focus to quality. Second, straps are back. In past years, a dress with strings stood out. On Saturday, they were reincorporated as halter necklines, one-shoulder designs, or carried an embroidered flower detail—a flattering and comfortable choice. One of my personal favorites had a layered fringe hem. Also, loud colors were traded for patterns this year. Most designs had some element of embroidery, sequins, tweed, or lace instead. On the topic of colors, this year was all about grey-blues and deep reds, along with a handful of silver and gold.
Next season, I predict that renting dresses will become popular. A friend of mine rented a stunning dress from Retroféte. You’ll never wear your homecoming dress again, and taste changes exponentially in high school. To avoid the sold-out epidemic in 2027, I will most definitely be shopping firsthand (or second-hand) starting in August.
