Sports 2025 Recap

This year was an especially busy year in sports, with many monumental moves rocking the sports world. Here are some of the most significant ones: 

January: 

  • Ichiro and CC Sabathia elected into MLB Hall of Fame, with Ichiro becoming the first Japanese-born player to get in
  • Ohio State became College Football champions after dominating Notre Dame

February: 

  • Eagles triumphed over the Chiefs in the Super Bowl 40-22; Hurts wins MVP
  • Luka Doncic traded to the Lakers for Anothony Davis in one of the biggest trades ever, shocking the whole NBA universe
  • William Byron won the Dayton 500
  • Canada won against the USA in the final of the 4 Nations Face-Off

March: 

  • Most of March Madness happened, with the Men’s Final Four featuring all #1 seeds for only the second time ever
  • Meanwhile, on the Women’s side, UCLA advanced to their first Final Four ever
  • Yankees, utilizing torpedo bats, scored 36 runs in an opening series against the Brewers
  • Ja’Marr Chase, Maxx Crosby, and Myles Garrett become highest paid non-QB’s in NFL history
  • Dodgers and Cubs faced off in Japan, featuring the first all-Japanese starting pitching matchup and drawing 25 million views in Japan

April: 

  • Both March Madness finals happened, with Florida winning for the men, and UConn upsetting South Carolina for the women
  • The NFL Draft occurred, with Cam Ward going number one to the Titans, and Shedeur Sanders unexpectedly falling to the fifth round
  • Paige Bueckers became the WNBA’s number one pick, going to the Dallas Wings
  • Rory McIlroy completed his Grand Slam by winning the Masters
  • Alex Ovechkin passed Wayne Gretzky for most NHL goals of all time
  • Liverpool secured the Premier League with a 4-1 victory over Tottenham
  • Barcelona and Inter Milan met in the UCL semifinals, resulting in a back and forth affair that ended 7-6 on aggregate in favor of Inter

May: 

  • Sovereignty won the Kentucky derby
  • Scottie Scheffler won the PGA Championship, capping off a dominant year
  • PSG destroyed Inter Milan 5-0 to win their first ever Champions League

June: 

  • OKC Thunder won the NBA Championship, defeating the Pacers in seven (with Haliburton tearing his achilles in the deciding match)
  • Florida Panthers defeated the Oilers in a 2024 finals rematch
  • Carlos Alcaraz and Coco Gauff each won the French Open
  • Portugal beat Spain to win the 2025 Nations League

July: 

  • Spain defeated England in the Women’s Euros
  • MLB had their all-star weekend festivities, with Cal Raleigh won the Home Run Derby and NL won the all-star game, which was decided by the first ever Swing-off
  • Chelsea won the Club World Cup in America
  • WNBA also had their all-star weekend, where Sabrina Ionescu won the three-point contest, and Napheesa Collier won the game’s MVP
  • Tadej Pogačar won the Tour de France

August: 

  • Star pass-rusher Micah Parsons traded to Packers after a months-long contract dispute
  • Sebastian Munoz won the final tournament of the LIV Golf season
  • Venus Williams announced her return to tennis for the US Open

September: 

  • Carlos Alcaraz won the US Open
  • After US’s slow start, Europe claimed the Ryder Cup
  • First ever NFL game in Ireland between the Steelers and the Vikings
  • Max Verstappen won the Italian Grand Prix

October: 

  • Dodgers won their second consecutive World Series after a thrilling game seven
  • Mark Walter purchased a majority stake in the LA Lakers for nearly 10 billion
  • Crazy NBA gambling scandal involving guard Terry Rozier and coach Chauncy Billups, among others, all of whom being associated with the mafia
  • Aces swept the Mercury in WNBA finals
  • A rare “Sports equinox”, where all of the big four leagues featured matches on the same day

November: 

  • Aaron Judge and Shohei repeat as MVPs in their respective leagues
  • Gotham FC won the NWSL championship capping a remarkable underdog season
  • Kyle Larson won the NASCAR regular season championship

December: 

  • Indiana QB Francisco Mendoza won the Heisman Trophy
  • Indianapolis Colts signed 44 year old Philip Rivers after Daniel Jones’ injury
  • Sherrone Moore, Michigan’s football coach, was ousted after scandalous behavior
  • Patrick Mahomes II tore his ACL, effectively ending the Chiefs’ dynasty
  • Anthony Joshua knocked out Jake Paul in an ill-conceived fight, leaving Paul with a broken jaw

It’s crazy to think that 2025 is already over. Hopefully, next year can have as much excitement as this year did!
