Home page on Stay Up to Date
I am your local weather guy, Brandon Wong, and a senior at Chatham High School. I have been passionate about the weather from a very young age. I remember the first time my grandma asked me to write and illustrate the weather forecasts for the week. My grandma liked the news people explaining the weather, so she was interested if I could do the forecasts as a hobby. My eyes widened with excitement as I meticulously drew the sun, clouds, and rain and wrote the daytime temperature highs and nighttime lows. After drawing the forecasts for the first few times, I knew that weather would become my passion and I had a glimpse into my future.
When I entered high school, I started researching more weather phenomena and how to predict potential natural disasters better. I desired to provide more accurate forecasts for our local community. That is why I created a weather website named “Stay Up to Date,” which releases weekly and mid-week local weather forecasts for our community. Subscribers also receive newsletters via email twice a week. Subscribers have told me that they are easy to read and comprehend. One subscriber, Irene, explained that she was “impressed with the website,” and she “likes to read it and get a sense for the weather outlook for the week.” Another subscriber, Sock, admired the outlooks as they have been very helpful, and “it’s concise and gives all the weather information I need.” She also appreciated “the use of the icons,” so she can tell what the weather forecast is, and the midweek updates to help “plan [her] midweek outdoor tennis sessions.” A recent subscriber, Pete, is a landscaper and believes that the “user-friendly” website assists with planning out his week and my forecasts are “much more accurate than what’s shown on TV.” Additionally, subscribers admire my forecasts because they prepare them for what to wear and whether they need to adjust their plans due to inclement weather. This feedback causes me to feel more motivated to update our community on the latest weather.
An example of a weekly weather outlook for our community.
Stay Up to Date not only publishes local weather updates but also tropics updates. There are occasional updates on the worldwide tropics, such as discussing a rapidly intensifying hurricane in the North Atlantic and a typhoon barreling toward Japan in the Western Pacific. If you are confused about any meteorological term, Stay Up to Date has the solution! There is a glossary of almost any significant weather term, including the definitions of a tornado, severe storm, tropical cyclone, and snow squall. Furthermore, Stay Up to Date releases the “Weather of the Month.” These updates elaborate on a significant weather event from the previous month, such as explaining Hurricane Beryl’s meteorological history and widespread impacts in July.
Weather apps can be somewhat inaccurate on the timing of precipitation and daytime temperature highs and nighttime lows. My website strives to be more accurate in those aspects. More importantly, I aim to educate and prepare the Chatham community for potential inclement weather such as powerful severe storms and dangerous blizzards. I hope individuals can Stay Up to Date with my forecasts so they know what to plan for their week.
