Student Spotlight: Three Field Hockey Captains Continuing into College

Wednesday, November 1st, 2017

Seniors Noelle Bessette, Charlotte Buckman, and Abby Walrond are just three of this year's five captains of the successful CHS field hockey team, but their careers won’t be ending this season. These three players have committed to play in college.

Midfielder Charlotte Buckman will be playing at Gettysburg College.

Center midfielder Bessette has always had field hockey in her life, as her father also excelled in the sport, playing on the men’s Junior National Team. Starting out as a defender, she found her place on the field by chance when a teammate was late to a game in seventh grade. “Someone needed to play forward, so I said I would do it,” says Bessette. “I ended up loving it.”

Because of her talent on both offense and defense, Bessette now plays in the midfield, directing the game with powerful drives and nimble dodging. Bessette plays for the club team Rapid Fire Elite and will be playing at Rutgers University, a Division-1 program and member of the Big Ten. While she notes that the recruitment process was very stressful, Bessette says that when she met the Rutgers team and coaches, “it felt very natural. They’re really nice and supportive.”

Goalie Abby Walrond did not always focus solely on saving shots. Up until eighth grade, she split her games with one half in the cage and the other on the field as a midfielder. Pursuing her love of goalkeeping, Walrond started her recruitment process in eighth grade. She committed to University of Rochester, a Division-3 program, this past April. When asked why she chose to continue into college, Walrond said with a shrug of her shoulder: “I just love it.” Walrond’s favorite memory of playing in high school thus far was her spectacular performance at this year’s Cougar Night, where she had 20 saves. Most memorable was a penalty stroke she faced with just 16 minutes left and the game tied at 1-1. Had Mount Olive scored, they would have taken the lead- but Walrond made a brilliant leaping save and deflected the ball with her stick. The Cougars ended up winning that night in overtime, 2-1.

Good luck to these seniors as they continue their field hockey careers!
