With the winter season comes winter sports. With winter sports comes basketball. Specifically, girls basketball.

In the final days of 2015 during the holiday break, both the boys and the girls teams played in the Chatham tradition, the Cougar Classic. Over the course of the three games played, the girls came out with a 2-1 record, their one loss being to Hunterdon Central. Besides their final game of the tournament against Governor Livingston, where they won 43-23, the games were close. On the opening day, Hunterdon Central squeezed out a 49-44 victory in the final half of the fourth quarter after being behind, previously 43-32. Later in the Cougar’s second game, they edged out Columbia (0-5) 45-44. It was a good bounce back from their previous game, but their win against Governor Livingston gives them the momentum for more upcoming games. Their most recent game against Mendham was another close one. The girls won 48-35, pushing off of the momentum from their Governor Livingston and Columbia games.

The girls basketball team is one to look out for this season, with a winning record, 5-3, so far. Michelle Connolly, a varsity player on the team noted, “We had a significantly difficult first seven games, but now we start conference and county play and we are looking to do really well.” That being said, this team should not be overlooked by any of the other highlighted sports teams this season.
