A Battle Lost

But the War Continues

On Friday, February 20th, the Chatham boy’s ice hockey team faced off against rival Morristown-Beard. In what was a re-match of last year’s Mennen Cup Final, Chatham was once more handed a loss by Morristown-Beard with a score of 5-0.

In an interview with TAP into Chatham, senior Will Barnett said that, “ We just didn’t play our game. We just weren’t there mentally. They wanted it more.”

The Cougars, who were heading into the matchup as the favored team, were outplayed on all cylinders, offensively and defensively. “They beat us in every aspect of the game, better goaltending, better defense, better offense,” said Chatham head coach Frank Gilberti in an interview with TAP.

The loss, although tough to swallow, had its positives, including the strong showing of the ‘7th Skater.’ In a theme of “crazy, wacky” attire, the Chatham student section certainly did not disappoint. Over one hundred energetic and dedicated students piled into the fan section, but were unfortunately silenced for most of the game because of the score.

The loss was so defeating to the fans and players, but there is more season to be had. The team is already contending for a state title, trying to put the past behind them. Already, they have had two emphatic victories, the first over Rumson by a score of 8-0, and the second over Lakeland by a score of 8-1.

These two commanding victories are proof that the Cougars are as motivated as ever to return to the state championship final. Perhaps the game against Morristown-Beard was a simple hiccup, but either way, the Cougars are hungry for wins.
