The 2012 Golden Globes

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Golden Globe Awards is a ceremony of great prestige, rewarding brilliance in television and film. The elegant event uses profits from the event for philanthropy, summing to more than $12 million in the past seventeen years to entertainment-related charities, as well as funding scholarships and other programs for future film and television professionals.

The annual event and dinner are in January of the ebullient awards season. January 15, 2012 marked the 69th Golden Globes Awards, taking place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverley Hills, California. As the event was televised live, 17 million viewers watched, mesmerized by the poised, yet comical atmosphere of the event. Ricky Gervais hosted the event for the third time, contributing to its fun, easy-going atmosphere, as the British comedian boldly ridiculed and joked at the Hollywood elite.

Although the nominees for the various awards were all supremely viable candidates, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association chose the “best of the best” from each category. Just to acknowledge a few of the accolades: Meryl Streep won Best Actress for her enthralling performance as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in “Iron Lady” and George Clooney won Best Actor for his role as an estranged Father in “The Descendents”; “The Descendents” won best picture as well. Many television actors and dramas were praised as the hilarious comedy “Modern Family” won Best TV Series Comedy, with viewers rooting for their personal favorite nominees as the highly anticipated awards were revealed. “I was rooting for ‘War Horse’ as the Best Film but its defeat only makes me want to see ‘The Descendents’ more,” comments an anonymous CHS student.

As world-renowned icons of the film industry consolidate at this event, viewers pay keen attention to the attire and styles set on the red carpet. This awards season dawned many light, sleek silhouettes in nudes, whites and pastels with accents of color, freshening up the winter palate. On the other hand, some actresses plunged into deep hues of maroon, navy and black (Harper’s Bazaar). “I loved how the dresses really reflected each person’s personality,” recounts a student. Dressing appropriately, while also “being yourself” is key at such a formal, but fun event.

The Golden Globes ceremony is highly prestigious, but its glamour and elegance sweep away viewers and attendees alike. The Golden Globes of 2013 will have a difficult time surpassing this year’s chic and successful event.
